Multi-instrumentalist, producer, string-arranger and composer Bill Ryder-Jones has had a career spanning 15 yrs, a rarity in a world that looks to the new. His talent stretches from a musical interpretation of Italo Calvino's ‘If On A Winters Night A Traveller' (2011's If..) to the top ten MOJO album of the year in 2016, 'West Kirby County Primary'. He is an artist’s artist with nods from musicians such as Courtney Barnett, Richard Hawley and Noel Gallagher. Bill's music weaves an overarching sense of authenticity, intimacy and wryness that allows the listener to lean in. Whilst always exploring different songwriting styles, he has still kept a very strong sense of self. The Guardian described him as ‘A magical, colossal talent (….) that spills melody and emotion’.
Our Girl have been wowing a growing army of listeners ever since their debut gig supporting Honeyblood in September 2014. It was during that fledging performance that singer/guitarist Soph Nathan realised that, of the five bands she was then playing in, Our Girl was the perfect home for her redoubtable songwriting.
The product of a thriving Brighton scene that includes The Magic Gang, Theo Verney and Abbatoir Blues, the band are capable of switching from stark tenderness to pulverising noise in a flash. Nathan's honest, personal lyrics float in a delicious array of sounds: rhythmic drum and guitar hooks make dynamic jumps to thick garage-rock riffs, then suddenly cut to beautiful, intimate moments of lone guitar and reverb-hugged vocals.
The trio have recently been playing with the likes of Genghar, TRAAMS, The Wytches, No Joy and Oscar, building up a head of steam that has seen them singled out by Lauren Laverne for special attention on BBC 6 Music, with the eponymous track 'Our Girl' selected for the DJ's MpFree feature. Soph Nathan, bassist Josh Tyler and drummer Lauren Wilson have been developing their devastating sound ever since. Our Girl released their debut single, ‘Sleeper’ via Cannibal Hymns on December 11th.
